In this field of study, students learn everything from the basics of reading a recipe to understanding how to create their own signature breads and rolls, as well as cakes, pastries, and other desserts. In addition, the fundamentals of food safety, nutrition, presentation, management, and interpersonal communication are also covered. The curriculum includes extensive hands-on training, usually in the form of an internship or externship. Several levels of instruction are available, from a certificate course to a bachelor’s degree. An associate’s degree in pastry arts can be obtained in as little as 21 months; some certificate courses can be completed in six to nine months.
